Our baguette is the perfect canvas to paint your meal on. Each one is perfectly baked to create the signature crunchy crust and soft, chewy inside.
Made with organic cold-pressed olive oil, this bread is light, fluffy, and flavorful. Perfect with antipasto, made into a sandwich, or all on its own.
Choose between Everything Bagel Seasoning, Rosemary & Sea Salt, or Mediterranean (rosemary, cherry tomatoes, and kalamata olives).
The perfectly subtle sourdough has arrived- perfect for soups, sandwiches, dipping in olive oil, or all on it's own. Our dough develops overnight in the fridge, letting the signature sour, yet buttery flavors slowly develop. And the best part is the longer it sits, the stronger the flavors get!
Who are you?
My name is Helen Marcantonio, I am the owner and head baker at Black Letter Bread! I specialize in all-natural artisan bread, there are no preservatives or additives and they are all homemade with a starter I made from scratch.
How did you get to where you are today with your business?
I started just by posting pictures of the breads I was making on Instagram and with some help from Jeff of Jeff’s Bagel Run with things like marketing and I started out at the Lake Speer Sidewalk Market!
Has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you have had to overcome?
One of my biggest challenges was my bread starter, it took about a month to get all the chemistry right and actually getting it to a point where it makes the quality of bread that I want and now I can make consistent bread no matter where I am baking.
What do you think sets you apart from others?
I have found that I’m the only one that focuses solely on bread while other local bakers tend to focus more on pastries. My breads and baguette are also naturally leavened which I find provides a lot more of a complex flavor profile compared to the store-bought alternatives.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am actually an opera singer! I studied it for eight years between high school and college and have found that it provided a solid discipline for me which allows me to be so dedicated to things like working on a starter for six months.
What village do you live in?
I live in Bridgewater Village!
What do you love about Horizon West?
I love everything here. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly which is refreshing, and I love that it is such an active community as well as love that the community is so gung-ho about local businesses and creating a local economy.
What are your hopes for it as it continues to build out over the next 5-10 years?
I’d love to see more people come into the community and continue to grow our mom-and-pop businesses and maybe help the people that are here now start something as well!
Marketing can be expensive and without the power of a franchise or corporation behind them, mom & pop sized local entrepreneurs depend on locals loving on them! Please take a moment to connect with Lake Speer Sidewalk Market (evolving soon to Created in HW) on social and you'll be sure to have future event info show up in your feed so you can come out and support them in person in addition to here on virtual Main Street!
