In Pursuit of Happiness in Life - in the town I choose to live in, Horizon West
Cynthia is Owner, Publisher and Creative Director of Horizon West Magazine, which lights the path to happiness in Horizon West. The HW Magazine team does this by shining the SPOTLIGHT on all the ways the people, places and offerings of Horizon West support us in living a good life.

SCRIBBLESPACE
Sharing Space
My office used to be in the back bedroom, way before this became normal for most in 2020, but after a decade+ of working in this more isolating way, it was long overdue to create what was missing – day-to-day social interaction – like I had the previous decade as an Art Director at Yellow Shoes at Disney World. The village center near my home here in Horizon West started buildout in 2014, so I jumped on the opportunity to set up a shared office space with services and space to work out of with our fellow entrepreneurs and work-from-homers in the Horizon West area.

ROTARY CLUB OF HORIZON WEST
I act as the Communications Chair for the Rotary Club of Horizon West because it provides me opportunities to build friendships with people I admire, to network and of course to consistently give back to our community in a way I wouldn't be able to without being involved.
I'm always interested in inviting community members to our lunch meetings which are held the 1st & 3rd Wednesdays of the month from Noon-1pm where we hear from various community organizations and about service opportunities for giving back through Rotary initiatives. Invite is always open to the last Wednesday Social Meetup as well at 5:30pm at a new location in Horizon West area each month.

SCRIBBLEFISH MEDIA
At My Core I'm a Creator
Being a creator - graphic design only made sense as a career when it came to college and answering, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Our design agency Scribblefish Media is what started me on this entrepreneurial journey after honing my craft for a decade at Disney's Yellow Shoes, the internal agency that puts heads in beds and clicks the turnstiles.
We now have 2 divisions - one focuses on custom content and platform creation for corporate clients such as the mouse and the other focuses on delivering awareness for local businesses that are in and serve Horizon West.

READING LIST
I'm an audiobook listener as I can take in the information while doing other tasks like driving, shopping, cleaning the kitchen. When I do sit down to read a book, it has a way of relaxing me so well that I end up dozing off 90% of the time, so I've found I can consume new information more quickly by listening to it!
I'm starting this list in July 2024 and will add what I'm listening to currently and will add what what I've listened to in the past and found great value in as well!
My best hope is that this list leads some to content that changes something for the positive for them in their lives! At the very least it will help me remember what I have listened to already as the list grows. :D

WHAT'S IN IT FOR THEM?
Author: Joe Polish
There’s no shortage of networking and entrepreneurship advice in books and on social media in today’s world—but it’s harder than ever to know what’s authentic. To make matters worse, taking the wrong advice can result in superficial connections, transactional relationships, and unsatisfying interactions with others without any real rapport.
Fortunately, as entrepreneur and marketer extraordinaire Joe Polish has discovered, there’s a simple (though sometimes not easy) way out that begins with one question: “What’s in it for them?”
Polish faces the problem of personal and professional disconnection head-on, offering entrepreneurs a heart- and mind-expanding guide on how to:
- Deepen rapport and connect with others by identifying and reducing their suffering
- Update Dale Carnegie’s insights to win the right friends and influence the right people
- Overcome others’ intimidation tactics to find true appreciation in relationships
- Build character for better results than capabilities can ever give on their own
- Use basic marketing principles to find true love
- Protect your efforts from the “takers” of the world

RADICAL ACCEPTANCEList Item 1
Author: Tara Brach, PH.D.
"Believing that something is wrong with us is a deep and tenacious suffering," says Tara Brach at the start of this illuminating book. This suffering emerges in crippling self-judgments and conflicts in our relationships, in addictions and perfectionism, in loneliness and overwork - all the forces that keep our lives constricted and unfulfilled. Radical Acceptance offers a path to freedom, including the day-to-day practical guidance developed over Dr. Brach's 20 years of work with therapy clients and Buddhist students.
Writing with great warmth and clarity, Tara Brach brings her teachings alive through personal stories and case histories, fresh interpretations of Buddhist tales, and guided meditations. Step by step, she leads us to trust our innate goodness, showing how we can develop the balance of clear-sightedness and compassion that is the essence of Radical Acceptance. Radical Acceptance does not mean self-indulgence or passivity. Instead it empowers genuine change: healing fear and shame and helping to build loving, authentic relationships. When we stop being at war with ourselves, we are free to live fully every precious moment of our lives.

THE POWER OF VULNERABILITY
Show Up and Let Yourself be Seen
Is vulnerability the same as weakness? “In our culture,” teaches Dr. Brené Brown, “we associate vulnerability with emotions we want to avoid such as fear, shame, and uncertainty. Yet we too often lose sight of the fact that vulnerability is also the birthplace of joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love.” On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.
Over the past twelve years, Dr. Brené Brown has interviewed hundreds of people as part of an ongoing study of vulnerability. “The research shows that we try to ward disappointment with a shield of cynicism, disarm shame by numbing ourselves against joy, and circumvent grief by shutting off our willingness to love,” explains Dr. Brown. When we become aware of these patterns, she teaches, we begin to become conscious of how much we sacrifice in the name of self-defense -and how much richer our lives become when we open ourselves to vulnerability.
“In my research,” Dr. Brown says, “the word I use to describe people who can live from a place of vulnerability is wholehearted.” Being wholehearted is a practice—one that we can choose to cultivate through empathy, gratitude, and awareness of our vulnerability armor. Join this engaging and heartfelt teacher on The Power of Vulnerability as she offers profound insights on leaning into the full spectrum of emotions—so we can show up, let ourselves be seen, and truly be all in.
